James M.K. Reed papers. 1848-1932, bulk 1874-1892.

The vast majority of this collection is comprised of legal documents from cases settled during J.M.K. Reed's tenure as Justice of the Peace. Most of the cases involve property disputes. Materials include contracts, deeds, summons, receipts, affidavits and other miscellaneous documents. The collection includes significant materials concerning Reed's real estate interests in Wayne County, Iowa. There are numerous letters written to and by his agent in Iowa, William Boyle. Also of note in the collection is a petition by Cross Creek residents to the Governor of Pennsylvania requesting that he prevent the formation of the Cross Creek Township Natural Gas Company on the grounds that the monopoly would violate their rights. There is also family correspondence from a variety of relatives, primarily from Pennsylvania and Ohio.
